Cross-Gender, Transgender, and Intersex Pat Searches

This course is designed to provide guidance in cross-gender, transgender, and intersex pat searches primarily of offenders that are incarcerated in a confinement setting such as community custody, juvenile detention, jail, or prison.

This training is related to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). If your agency is not a PREA compliant agency, PREA is still a "best practice" to follow. Both in the care of your offenders, the training of staff, and overall risk and liability of your agency.

Why is "best practice" important? If an agency can continue to implement new best practices as they immerge it will reduce uses of force, behavioral issues, suicide attempts, reduce staff injury, lawsuits, and create a better environment for both our correctional professionals and the community they serve.

Note: This course would also apply to Law Enforcement Officers seeking guidance in cross-gender and transgender pat searches in a patrol setting. Patrol officers are not subject to the same legal limitations as corrections on staff/inmate gender searches.

However, before a transgender or intersex offender becomes a offender, they likely had contact with a patrol officer.

This course will provide guidance in maintaining respectful searches, and preventing trauma triggers that is interchangeable regardless your assignment.
